Two months into U.S. President Donald Trump’s second term,

the U.S.-Chinese relationship—the most consequential one in the world by a long stretch—faces new uncertainty.

Trump has threatened larger tariffs as China has continued its military buildup and activities in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea.

But Trump has also focused his ire on allied capitals, rather than on Beijing,

and talked about making a deal with his “very good friend” Xi Jinping.

In a recent essay for Foreign Affairs, Jude Blanchette and Ryan Hass stressed the importance, and highlighted the challenge, of understanding the balance of power with America’s top rival.

The biggest risk, they argue, is not that Washington will underestimate China’s strength, but that it will neglect the sources of its own.

Blanchette runs the China Research Center at the RAND Corporation; Hass, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, long worked on China policy at the National Security Council and State Department.

They joined editor Dan Kurtz-Phelan to discuss Beijing’s assessment of American power, the prospects for a “grand bargain” between Trump and Xi, and whether fears of American decline risk becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Foreign Affairs Interview

The Foreign Affairs Interview is a podcast series launched by Foreign Affairs magazine. Since its inception, it has garnered significant attention from international relations scholars, policymakers, and general audiences alike.

Program Overview

Hosted by Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, the editor of Foreign Affairs, the program invites a wide range of experts, scholars, policymakers, and former officials to engage in in-depth discussions on a variety of critical issues, including international politics, foreign policy, global security, and economic cooperation.

Content and Features

The content of the podcast is diverse and comprehensive, covering a broad spectrum of global hot topics.

For instance, on November 21, 2024, Francis Fukuyama, a political scientist from Stanford University, joined the program to discuss the implications of Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election for global democracy and the future of liberalism.

Additionally, the podcast delves into regional conflicts. On May 30, 2024, Vali Nasr, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, was invited to discuss the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel and their potential impact on the future of the Middle East.

These in-depth conversations provide listeners with a comprehensive window into understanding international affairs.

Another notable feature of The Foreign Affairs Interview is its strong lineup of guests. The program invites authorities from various fields, and their insights and perspectives are highly valuable.

For example, on October 26, 2022, Nicholas Burns, the former U.S. ambassador to China, shared his views on U.S.-China relations and the challenges faced by American foreign policy in China.

The participation of such distinguished guests allows the program to explore international affairs from multiple angles, offering a diverse range of viewpoints to the audience.

Value and Impact

Moreover, the podcast pays close attention to the policy-making process. On August 15, 2024, Kori Schake, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute,

discussed the current state and future direction of Republican foreign policy.

This focus on policy-making not only helps explain the current state of international affairs but also enables listeners to understand the logic and motivations behind policy decisions.
